Buying new printer? don't want to have to buy new cartridges a lot.?

i need a printer, i'm an art and textiles student so im going to be using it a fair bit in colour with a lot of black for essays etc. i want a cheap one but one thats going to have good value and i won't have to buy new cartridges all the time. i don't understand the difference between laserjet/deskjet/inkjet etc so info would be appreciated and please remember im a student so i can't afford a big printer thanks a lot xx
