What movie is this?

a man, it think he was a fireman but i'm not sure, talks to his deseased father through a radio (back in time 20 or so years). They then work together to solve the murder of his mother who was killed by a seral killer. The mother was a nurse...this is all i remember anyone know the name of the movie?
